THE WILL TO BE Written and performed by Mark Salvestro. The Q Theatre, Queanbeyan. June 13-14.
This is a one man piece that recalls the shifts and sexual cover ups of an earlier age. A married academic somewhere around the turn into the 1970s is on the verge of getting tenure when his life is derailed by a mutual attraction to a male student. Back then ironically an attraction to a female student would scarcely have raised an eyebrow. How this brings his life into chaos and pushes him toward transformation is powerfully developed in this short play. There’s some good sense of the times and the places and the attitudes. And Salvestro’s performance opens up toward the end to show that social change is on the way.
